Turner completed the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2011. The 14-story, 43,100- square-meter healthcare facility features space for 142 beds—and a child-friendly environment. Numerous play areas throughout the building and more than 1,500 pieces of artwork created by children help make the space welcoming. The exterior plaza serves as both a vegetated roofing system to reduce urban heat effects and an interactive park playground. The hospital received LEED Gold certification in 2012— in part for its heat recovery system and its highly efficient building shell, both factors that make a key contribution to the energy efficiency of the property.
