After doing various internships while I was still studying, I actually only planned to participate in one last “practice phase” in HOCHTIEF’s Corporate Development department in order to improve my qualifications. I was interested in strategy development at a major international group. The three months I planned for this turned into four because I became involved in preparations for a major acquisition, and I wanted to see things out to the end. My decision to extend the internship was also influenced by the way HOCHTIEF treated me. Interns at HOCHTIEF are dealt with like temporary employees — in other words, they are fully integrated into the organization and included in all activities. You can contribute your ideas and are taken seriously as a discussion partner — you’re part of the team. Because of that — and because of the friendly atmosphere among my colleagues — I didn’t want to leave. When it came time to talk to my supervisor on the last day of my internship, the conversation automatically turned to my career plans after graduation.
I was given an interview with HOCHTIEF a few months later, this time as a potential employee. The interview went well, the company hired me, and today I work in the same department where I did my internship. This “warm start” to the job had a lot of advantages, but the biggest one was that I already knew my colleagues and the type of work the department did. My job now at Corporate Development is to help ensure that HOCHTIEF’s business divisions and strategies will continue to offer our customers utility in the future, and that we remain a successful company. I get to do a lot of different things and see things from various perspectives. Sometimes I participate in projects that further develop our organization, and at other times I’m involved in studies of potential new markets. So every day I see something new, which makes my job very exciting. What I really like about HOCHTIEF is that we’re a company you can “sink your teeth into,” one that ultimately measures itself in terms of solid business results. We provide our customers with added value they can see and feel, not just figures in PowerPoint presentations.
I would advise anyone who is now joining us or is just interested in our company to ask questions, and ask them again and again. HOCHTIEF is a great company with many employees who are willing to help you. All you have to do is ask.
