HOCHTIEF appoints a central representative for environmental protection (Environmental Representative).

Environmental Representatives take up office in the corporate divisions.

1994

HOCHTIEF introduces internal environmental reporting and the corresponding report to the Executive Board.

1998

Environmental protection and occupational safety become integral components of the corporate quality management system and guiding principles for these areas are established.

HOCHTIEF features for the first time in RWE’s environmental report. Australian subsidiary Thiess Pty Limited publishes its first environmental report.

1999

HOCHTIEF establishes a reporting system for environmental damage.

A mission statement on occupational safety and environmental protection is published in the company’s management manual.

Australian subsidiary Leighton Contractors publishes its first environmental report. HOCHTIEF signs on as a member of Transparency International e.V.

2000

HOCHTIEF is the first construction company worldwide to pledge compliance with the social standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

HOCHTIEF adopts its Corporate Directive on Risk Management.

Once again, HOCHTIEF features in RWE’s environmental report.

2001

HOCHTIEF publishes the first of its own Environmental Reports, covering the period 1999/2000.

Founding of the Helfmann Fund to assist employees in emergency situations.

2002

HOCHTIEF adopts its Corporate Directive on Business Ethics and pledges to uphold the German Corporate Governance Code, delivering a declaration of compliance with the Code.

HOCHTIEF joins the German Environmental Management Association (B.A.U.M).

Australian subsidiary Leighton Asia issues its first environmental report.

HOCHTIEF continues to feature in the RWE environmental report.

2003

The new Group-wide Corporate Directive on Environmental Protection, Health and Safety, which is also mandatory for subsidiaries and associates outside Germany, comes into effect.

The Corporate Directive on Risk Management is modified in line with HOCHTIEF's new Group structure.

HOCHTIEF publishes its second Environmental Report, covering the period 2001/2002.

Thiess publishes its first Sustainability Report.

2004

Turner formally commits to a "Green Building" agenda. Introduction of uniform Group-wide reporting based on the Corporate Directive on Environmental Protection, Health and Safety. Innovation project on building rating systems launched.

2005

Founding of OSHEP as a competence center for occupational safety, health and environmental protection. HOCHTIEF expands the Helfmann Fund to provide aid to disaster victims.

The HOCHTIEF Executive Board approves a new corporate Vision and reworked Guiding Principles. Sustainability is one of the cornerstones. The new Code of Conduct comes into force at HOCHTIEF.

HOCHTIEF publishes its first Sustainability Report, covering the period 2003/2004.

2006

In September HOCHTIEF is the first German construction company and one of only six construction service providers in the world to be included in the prestige Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI). The DJSI only list companies which also take into account and keep records of environmental and social criteria for corporate management in addition to financial ones. Our shares are listed on both the DJSI World and the DJSI STOXX.

The HOCHTIEF sustainability report "Bring Space to Life" wins the 2006 German Environmental Reporting Award (DURA) in a contest to select the best corporate environmental and sustainability reports in Germany. HOCHTIEF receives the prize for the best first report in the category sustainability reporting.

2007

HOCHTIEF becomes founder member of German Sustainable Building Council. Under the slogan "For a future-oriented built environment", it aims to promote sustainable building in Germany, focusing not just on the actual construction process but on the entire life-cycle of properties.

Together with partners, HOCHTIEF is to realize the first geothermal energy plant in Germany financed entirely by private enterprise. For this purpose, a company called Süddeutsche Geothermie-Projekte GmbH & Co. KG (SGG) has been set up, in which HOCHTIEF holds 40 percent of the shares.

HOCHTIEF publishes its second Sustainability Report, covering the period 2005/2006.

2008

Following the successful takeover of Vattenfall Europe Contracting at the end of 2007, HOCHTIEF is concentrating its energy contracting and energy management activities in a new company with effect from January 2008. The new undertaking, HOCHTIEF Energy Management, offers modern solutions in energy optimization to businesses and institutions. With a workforce of over 300 employees, the company is starting out as one of the leading suppliers on the market with turnover of EUR 90 million (cumulative figures for 2007).

In March, former Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Michael Glos invited representatives of the German construction industry to take part in a dialog round on "Industry and Environment" at the ministry. The theme of the event was "Climate Protection in Construction", and various presentations were given on the construction industry's contribution to environmental and climate protection. The presentation given by HOCHTIEF Consult, "The construction system solution as a response to climate protection", highlighted the common characteristics of the various new technologies.

In June HOCHTIEF is selected for inclusion in the ESI Excellence Europe. The Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe was designed to approximate the S&P 350 Europe Index with respect to sustainability. Only Europe's leading companies in terms of sustainability get added in the Index. HOCHTIEF is the only German construction service provider (Sector "Heavy Construction") and one of only four construction service providers in the world which has been included in the ESI Excellence Europe.

In October HOCHTIEF's US subsidiary published an official undertaking in relation to climate protection. The company intends to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 5% over the next five years. It's an ambitious target, which the company plans to achieve through energy-saving measures in its offices and cutting gasoline consumption for its company cars.

In November, sponsors from politics, science and business celebrated the official opening of inHaus2. This innovation workshop, which brings together science and business, is used to research and develop commercial properties. Research work is carried out by several divisions–principally HOCHTIEF Construction, HOCHTIEF Facility Management and HOCHTIEF ViCon–in collaboration with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and partner companies, to identify optimum ways of planning, building and operating commercial real estate.

We underlined our convictions in November 2008 by joining the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate responsibility initiative.

2009

The CR/Sustainability function is integrated into the Corporate Development corporate center, which reports directly to the Chairman of the Executive Board.

The HOCHTIEF Climate Protection Day held for the first time in 2009 was a success: 2,800 staff tuned into live intranet webcasts on a range of climate-related topics and energy economy.

Since March, our Australian subsidiary Leighton is also listed in the new Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index.

In the USA, the hundredth project achieved LEED certification.

HOCHTIEF subsidiary Turner awarded contracts worth just under 747 million euros to minority and women owned businesses in 2009. This means that the billion dollar milestone has been surpassed for the fifth year in a row.

2010

HOCHTIEF is a sponsoring partner and also the official technical director of RUHR.2010.

HOCHTIEF wins Best of European Business Award 2010 in the "Growth despite Crisis" category for large-scale companies. According to the jury, made up of high-ranking representatives from the University of St. Gallen, manager magazin, FTD and Roland Berger, HOCHTIEF also survived the economic crisis so well because the company changed its strategy in good time.
