Examples of HOCHTIEF projects in Germany designed with sustainability in mind

HOCHTIEF is one of the founding members of the German Green Building Council (Deutsche Gesellschaft für nachhaltiges Bauen e.V.) The council is made up, among others, of architects, investors, contractors and scientists. The goal of the initiative is to counteract climate change and develop concepts for saving energy, with the focus being on sustainable building. The organization has made it its priority to certify real estate meeting environmental friendliness, health and resource-protection criteria during construction as well as during use.

As long ago as the early 1990s the construction of RWE's head office in Essen and of the Commerzbank tower in Frankfurt am Main caused a big stir. In these buildings – both HOCHTIEF projects – back-ventilated double cladding ensures natural ventilation right up to the top floors. In addition, the ecological concept provided for the use only of building materials which were not harmful to health. The "sky gardens", which were desigend as Klimapuffer inside the Commerzbank tower, are still the model for numerous new buildings today.
