The history of a construction company is always also the history of general economics. It is inseparably linked to the development of trade and industry, of economy and company. Manfred Pohl and Birgit Siekmann have successfully presented this in the history of HOCHTIEF. HOCHTIEF is now not only the largest construction company in Germany, but also the oldest. Its beginnings date back to the 70's of the 19th century, when the brothers Helfmann opened a building business in Frankfurt am Main. The invention of reinforced concrete also triggered the successful development of HOCHTIEF. After the Second World War, during the course of the economic miracle, HOCHTIEF made its international breakthrough. As an economic leader, the company implements today, starting from its core competence construction, complex projects of all dimensions on all continents.
Professor Dr. Manfred Pohl, born 1944, completed a bank training and studied history, German language and literature and economics. Since 1972, he is managing the Historical Institute of the Deutsche Bank and since 1981, he is teaching at the University in Frankfurt am Main. With his encouragement the "Gesellschaft für Unternehmensgeschichte" (Society for Business History) was founded in 1976 and in 1997 the "Society for European Business History".
Dr. Birgit Siekmann, born 1963, studied German language and literature and history. Since her promotion in 1995, she is working for HOCHTIEF as a historian.
