Al Habtoor Leighton Group to construct water supply infrastructure on the Gulf - John Holland reaches financial close on Melbourne’s railway
The Al Habtoor Leighton Group has been awarded a contract to construct water infrastructure facilities in two communities in Qatar. The project has a volume of approximately EUR 144 million (QAR 750 million). The Al Habtoor Leighton Group is part of HOCHTIEF subsidiary Leighton Holdings‘ portfolio. Another Leighton Group company, John Holland, has reached financial close on a project in Melbourne: As member of a consortium, the company will operate the city’s passenger train franchise for a period of eight years. John Holland expects annual revenues of some EUR 95 million (AUD 162 million) from its share.

The water supply project in Qatar includes construction of two pump houses, roughly 16 kilometers of water distribution pipeline as well as reservoirs, buildings and associated infrastructure. By realizing this project, client Qatar General Electric & Water Corporation wants to ensure water supplies to the communities of Duhail and Umm Qarn. The Al Habtoor Leighton Group already started the works and will complete the project by 2012.

In Australia, the Metro Trains Melbourne Consortium around John Holland will start operating Melbourne’s rail network in November 2009. Beside operation, the contract also includes maintenance works and runs for an initial period of eight years, with options for up to an additional seven years. John Holland may also be awarded additional contracts beyond the agreed volume, for example from capital works associated with the rail franchise.
