| HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd is pleased to announce that they have won the Medium Project (3 -50m pounds) Civil Engineering Award 2006 for their Paddington Bridge Project. The announcement was made at the British Construction Industry Awards, held at the Grosvenor Hotel, London on Thursday 26th October 2006.HOCHTIEF (UK) was commissioned by client Westminster City Council to replace a collection of 19th century bridges with a new composite six lane structure to remove a traffic bottle neck.Bishop’s Bridge beat four other superb civil finalists because it was a fantastic feat of engineering. The ingenious solution was a brilliant response to the challenge of building a six lane viaduct to replace an assortment of bridges spanning across 14 mainline rail tracks, 2 underground lines, a canal and a large sewer. This is the 3rd Award for HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction in last two months. They were also awarded the Civil Engineering Award at the National Rail Awards 2006 and the ICE Merit Award 2006 at the ICE and IMechE Inaugural joint dinner and were commended by judges for displaying “professional ingenuity, creativity and impeccable execution” on their 26m pounds lift and launch bridge scheme delivered on time and below budget.About the project:This design and build contract involves the demolition and replacement of Bishop’s Bridge Road bridge in order to improve vehicular access to Paddington Station.Bishop’s Bridge Road spans fourteen Network Rail lines, two London underground lines, the Grand Union canal, a Thames Water sewer and a disused goods yard site. It also lies at the entrance to one of London’s busiest railway stations. Taking these combined challenges into account and with maximising safety and minimising disruption as key priorities, an innovative solution was developed.Comments:Sally Sunderland, Project Manager"We are very proud to receive this award; it represents three years of hard work and careful planning and is a credit to all the parties who contributed to the success of the Project."Stephen Ives, Managing Director "We are absolutely delighted to have won these Awards which continue to demonstrate our strength in carrying out complex structural projects in difficult locations."HOCHTIEF is one of the leading international providers of construction-related services.
