Warsaw International Airport, 1990-1992
Warsaw needed a new airport, but the Polish state airline PPL did not have
the money for one. HOCHTIEF solved the problem: For the construction of
a new passenger and freight building the company stitched a triangular deal
together, took over the role of general contractor, and also set up the whole
financial structure.
The client, PPL, was only able to cover about one-third of the total costs from
its own resources. HOCHTIEF therefore arranged for the work to be paid for by
a bank which then reaped its rewards because PPL assigned to it, for a limited
time, the revenue that accrues to it when aircraft land, take off, or use Polish
airspace.
