Airport in Jeddah, 1974-1985
Of all the legendary projects that HOCHTIEF has completed it is the
international airport of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia that takes on a particularly
outstanding role. The whole fenced-off site is 40 square miles in size.
Four terminals form the core of the complex: South Terminal for the
Saudia airline, North Terminal for international airlines, the Pilgrims' Terminal for
the charter flights used by pilgrims to Mecca, and the Royal Pavilion
for state occasions.
The fascinating tent-like architecture of the Pilgrims' Terminal forms the largest
roofed-in area in the world and has already provided shade for millions of Mecca pilgrims.
This turnkey airport project was also the biggest contract ever placed with a single construction company.
Jeddah Airport is a milestone along HOCHTIEF's road towards becoming the system leader in airport construction. HOCHTIEF has been working in this field of business for almost 40 years. HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH now brings this know-how together in one company.
