The Echelsbach Bridge
The Echelsbach Bridge in southern Bavaria crosses a deep gorge through which
the River Ammer runs. It was opened on January 1st, 1930, and the traffic that
uses it first has to clamber through hairpin bends and 1-in-5 gradients.
The Echelsbach Bridge had a record-breaking free load-bearing span of 430 feet,
which made it Germany's longest single-span reinforced concrete bridge. The weekly
movie newsreels gave pride of place to the engineers and workmen from
HOCHTIEF who had created this unique structure in only ten months.
