After receiving my bachelor's degree in international business at the University of Maastricht, I decided to do a three-month internship. It was important to me to be able to work in the fields I had majored in, which were “Organization” and “Strategy,” while I was looking for the right job. I also wanted to put my theoretical knowledge into practice, preferably in a globally operating company. I checked out HOCHTIEF’s careers website, where I found a posting for a position in the Corporate Human Resources department that seemed to match my skills and wishes perfectly. I applied and got the job.
I was integrated into the team right from the beginning. I learned about very different kinds of fields, such as HR strategy, public relations, management development, and compensation and benefits. The issues I dealt with were very timely and included the promotion of women in the workplace, future personnel risks, and megatrends in human resources such as social media, demographic transformation, and the shortage of specialists. I also learned about HOCHTIEF’s remuneration structure at its international subsidiaries. I was really pleased by the fact that I was allowed to help organize a three-day management meeting for managerial staff from Europe, America, and Australia. This enabled me to use my English skills and apply my theoretical knowledge. One of the best projects I worked on involved redesigning the Group’s careers website. It was interesting to see just how much work goes into a project like that, and it was also nice to experience a result that I had helped to achieve.
I always felt like a true member of the team during my internship. My team colleagues asked me about my personal interests and I was able to contribute my own ideas. I learned a great deal during my time at HOCHTIEF, and I definitely plan to stay in touch with my team. I also hope I can get a job at the Group after I finish my master's degree.
