The term Virtual Design and Construction (ViCon) describes the procedure of planning
and simulating the construction and operation of a building with the help of
three-dimensional computer models.
These models cover the entire life cycle of the building, thus providing for both
time and cost savings.
4D model
The basis for all applications under ViCon is a three-dimensional computer model
which, enhanced by additional information, is used as a 4D model for a variety of
tasks. Properties and characteristics can be saved additionally in the model, for
example time relations between the installation works for individual building
elements, and the costs of construction elements.
The technology available today permits the generation of 4D models in an appropriate
period of time and at acceptable cost. As a consequence, no software products need
to be developed for ViCon. Moreover, ViCon can process any data formats and data
models and is not limited to specific software products or developers.
Communication and coordination
Experience has shown that 80 percent of time input is required for describing a
problem and 20 percent for actual problem solution. With ViCon, these figures
are reversed: the time input for identifying and describing the problem is reduced
so that more time is available for developing a solution. This is due to the fact that
the 3D presentation of a building is perceived as being more natural by the beholder
and can be understood more easily by him than 2D drawings. Graphic 4D models
significantly simplify communication between the project parties.
Where work sections that have largely been planned separately are integrated into
one model, this means an effective support for coordination and communication in
the planning phase. This and the current, reliable data of the 4D model results in
improved planning/design quality and eventually in an improved building structure.
